Painter Helmond

Helmond has around 95,000 inhabitants and a very mixed housing stock. In the Binnenstad, around the castle and the old canal, are pre-war houses with tall timber frames and ornate details. Brouwhuis and the surrounding post-war neighbourhoods are streets of terraced family homes from the 1950s to 1970s, originally built for the workers of the textile and metal industries. Brandevoort is the opposite: a large new district built in a deliberately traditional style, with plenty of painted timber that is now reaching its first serious maintenance cycle. De Akkers and the other newer areas complete the picture.

Helmond lies in the valley of the river Aa, and the north and west sides of a house, which get the least sun and stay damp longest, are where we find most wood rot. If you are checking your own frames, start there: look for cracked or bubbling paint, dark discolouration and timber that feels soft when you press it at the bottom corners.

Our wood rot repair removes the decayed timber, hardens the surrounding wood and rebuilds the section with two-component epoxy before painting. Where more than about a third of a section is gone we advise partial replacement instead, and we say so plainly; we do not sell repairs that will not last.

Brandevoort is a special case. Its houses are new, but they were built with a lot of painted timber to achieve the traditional look, and the first owners are now discovering that a neo-traditional house has traditional maintenance needs. A preventive repaint of the frames and fascias now is far cheaper than dealing with wood rot in a few years.
