Wallpaper in Dutch homes: more than decoration

Why so many Dutch walls are papered

Walk into a pre-1980 Dutch house and the walls are rarely perfectly flat. Old lime plaster, settlement cracks, patched sockets and decades of filler leave a surface that shows every flaw once painted. Rather than re-plastering, Dutch decorators hang a paintable base layer that bridges the imperfections and creates a smooth, uniform wall. That is what most of our wallpapering work is about, and it is one of the most cost-effective ways to make a tired room look new.

Kivits Vastgoedonderhoud is a registered Dutch painting and property maintenance company (KVK 94153965) based in 's-Hertogenbosch. Founder Leroy Kivits and his team communicate comfortably in English, so expats and international homeowners get the same clear advice, written quote and 5-year warranty as our Dutch clients.

Glass-fibre and renovation fleece: the paintable base

Glass-fibre wallpaper, or glasvlies in Dutch, is a woven fabric that is exceptionally strong and impact-resistant. It comes in fine, medium and coarse textures, hides rough or damaged plaster, and is ideal for stairwells, hallways and rooms that take a beating. Renovation fleece, or renovlies, is a smooth non-woven layer that hides hairline cracks and colour differences and gives a completely flat surface. Both are hung with a dedicated adhesive, then painted or sprayed in any colour you like.

Because the finish is paint, you are not locked into a look: the wall can be repainted in a different colour years later without touching the paper. Combining a fleece base with airless spraying gives the flattest wall you can get short of new plaster.

Patterned, textured and photo wallpaper

Decorative wallpaper is where precision shows. With a pattern repeat we calculate the drops so the motif runs continuously at eye level and meets cleanly in corners, and we plan the layout so a full motif sits where you look first. Photo wallpaper and murals are hung panel by panel, aligned to the millimetre around windows, sockets and sloping ceilings. Vinyl and washable papers for kitchens, bathrooms and hallways are hung with the correct adhesive for the room's humidity.

Removing old wallpaper and preparing the wall

Most jobs start with stripping what is already there. We steam off old paper, remove the adhesive residue, fill cracks and holes, sand the wall smooth and apply a primer so the new paper bonds evenly and can be removed cleanly in the future. We also check the wall for damp before hanging anything, because paper over a moisture problem simply hides it until it fails.

Skipping this stage is the reason DIY wallpaper bubbles, lifts at the seams or shows lines within a year. We do not skip it.

How we work and what you get

You can buy the wallpaper yourself or let us advise you on a supplier; either way we calculate the number of rolls from your measurements so you are not left with three spare or one short. A free visit to assess the walls comes first, followed by an itemised written quote within 48 hours. The finished work is covered by our 5-year warranty on materials and workmanship.

We hang wallpaper throughout Noord-Brabant, including Tilburg, Den Bosch, Eindhoven and Breda; see all our English-language services. Request a free quote or read the Dutch version of this page: Behangen.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between glass-fibre and renovation fleece?

Glass-fibre (glasvlies) is a woven, very strong paper with a visible texture, ideal for rough walls and high-traffic areas. Renovation fleece (renovlies) is smooth and non-woven, hides hairline cracks and gives a perfectly flat, paintable wall. We advise which suits your walls during the free visit.

What does wallpapering cost?

It depends on the type of paper, the pattern, the condition of the walls and whether old paper needs removing. We only quote after seeing the room, and the written quote follows within 48 hours, free of charge.

Do I have to remove the old wallpaper first?

In almost all cases the old paper should come off for a lasting result. We take care of stripping, filling, sanding and priming as part of the job.

Can the wallpaper be painted afterwards?

Yes. Glass-fibre and renovation fleece are designed to be painted or sprayed, and can be repainted in a new colour years later without rehanging.

Do I need to buy the wallpaper myself?

You can, or we can recommend a supplier. Either way we calculate the exact number of rolls you need based on the pattern repeat and your wall measurements.
